A soil pit profile is a vertical cross-section of the ground, divided into horizons — layers that differ in color, texture, and composition. Field scientists dig pits and record each horizon to understand soil history, archaeology, and land use.

Each horizon has a Munsell color code — a scientific standard used by soil scientists worldwide. It has three parts:

Hue — the color family (e.g. 10YR = yellow-red)
Value — lightness, 2 (very dark) → 8 (very light)
Chroma — saturation, 1 (dull) → 8 (vivid)

Series & Profiles

A series is any named grouping of profiles — a survey transect, an excavation unit, a trench, or any sequence that makes sense for your project.

Each series contains as many profiles as you need. Switch between series instantly with the selector in the toolbar.

Recording a pit takes under a minute:

Select or create a series, then navigate to a profile
Tap the horizon letter (A/B/C/E) and dial in the Munsell color
Type the depth in cm — the profile renders live
